Friday Flourish: Double-Over California Twirl Switch

This week's flourish is a California twirl flourish submitted to us by reader Jess Purvis of the Glenside, PA dance community. It's a switch flourish on a California twirl, particularly if it's used as the progression figure.
It's a neat switch flourish for a California twirl, but if you have enough room you can roll-away and unswitch yourselves before moving on. (In order to do that, you have to book it around though, so be spatially aware and ready to proceed switched if you get around and realize there's not enough time/space to roll your partner.) 

This weekend, I'll be at the Celebration of DC Dance (scroll down on that page), starting tonight and extending through Sunday, with an alt contra tonight by dJ improper and Ann Fallon, among other great DC-area callers and bands.

Friday Flourish: Extra-Twirly California Twirl Variants

Also, Contra Syncretist is pleased to announce that this year, the Lake Eden Arts Festival  (May 10-13,  2012) in Black Mountain, NC will be called by friend of the site Brian Hamshar, as well as Beth Molaro with the Horseflies and Lift Ticket playing. And Technophoria's DJ Shel D will be spinning a techno contra there as well!

Friday Flourish: Cuddle-Up California Twirl

This week's flourish is a variant on a California twirl -- you'll have to be quick to pull it off, but it can be done in the time allotted and add a little more speed to your dance. And it's a lot of fun to boot. Enjoy!

While Steve's day job will alas be preventing him from going, I hope to see some of you at the Black Friday Bash later today at the fabulous Glen Echo, MD Spanish Ballroom! Government Contra Act and the Capital Quicksteps Quadrille Orchestra will be playing in the afternoon and evening, respectively, to the calling of Kathy Anderson and Ron Buchanan. Then at midnight, the festivities will move into the Ballroom Annex, where Brian Hamshar will call a techno contra to the music of dJ improper. Dancing starts at 3 PM.

As of this writing, I have not yet decided whether I am (or whether we are) going to be able to make it up to the Glenside, PA community on Saturday at 2 PM to attend ContraCopia-Dance O'Plenty with Bob Isaacs, Adina Gordon, and Kathy Anderson calling over the span of nine hours to the music of Jane's Gang and Larry Unger, Brooklyn Swing Ensemble, and the Avant Gardeners; I know a few people from Glen Echo were planning on going, and if you're going to be in the area, you should go too!

Hope to see (and dance with!) some of you at these events!
