When we talked to Glen Loper, he mentioned that he'd been a part of the Beatles Contra on May 23, 2008 with Rick Mohr. Read all about it (and see pictures!) here.
This is actually one of my favorite simpler flourishes. One of my (other) favorite dance partners is rather fond of leading this one, and it's pretty friendly to people who may not want to pull out the more complex flourishes we've featured but still want some variety. Be mindful of your partner's shoulders, especially in the two-handed version, but the one-handed versions can pretty much be done by anybody who can twirl on a chain or out of a swing. Additionally, the possibility of harm -- as opposed to mere "argh, I wish that had worked" -- if this one gets flubbed is rather minimal.
You, too, could have your flourishes featured on this blog! Upload them to YouTube and then let me know they're there via the Contact form, and I might feature them some Friday on this blog!
Carry on Dancing,
This project has concluded as of mid-2013 (with an epilogue posted mid-2016) but we hope to see you soon on a contra dance floor! Meanwhile, head over to our Facebook page for upcoming techno contra events and other items of interest.
The 100+ Friday Flourish videos can still be found on YouTube.
I dance with abandon. I play with glowsticks. I look for music that is conducive to one or both. I play behind cameras. I write about all of the above. I'm based in Glen Echo's contra dance community outside of Washington, D.C., but I'm happy to go dance afield when I can. Lather, rinse, repeat. Always repeat.
